Here's one way to recycle a newspaper

aghu@ifas.ufl.edu

Q: I've heard that shredded newspaper can be used to combat nematodes. Is this true?

R.M.,

Bahamas

A: I'm not familiar with any evidence showing the benefits of using newspapers against nematodes. However, you can safely add newspapers to your compost pile as a good way to recycle them, although they add almost no plant nutrients. Avoid composting color inserts printed on shiny paper.

In the vegetable garden, plant nematode-resistant vegetable varieties and cover the bed with clear plastic sheeting during the summer if you aren't growing anything then. Make sure that the edges of the plastic are tucked into the soil and that the soil was moist before laying down the plastic. Leave in place for four to six weeks before planting.

You can also grow your vegetables in raised beds using either compost, compost + potting soil, or potting soil to avoid nematode problems.

In the landscape, mulching helps. Use pine bark or whatever organic mulch that's available in your area. Keep it three to four inches deep and several inches away from stems and trunks of plants.
