FIU overmatched against Iowa
By MIKE MALLOY
Ricky Stanzi threw three touchdowns passes in his first start, Shonn Greene ran for 130 yards and Iowa pounded FIU 42-0 for its second straight blowout win.

Last week, T.Y. Hilton scored his first collegiate touchdown on a punt return. This week, he had another milestone that won't be remembered as fondly -- his first tackle. Iowa's A.J. Edds intercepted a pass in the first quarter, and after a 38-yard return, Hilton dragged Edds down from behind. Hilton had 7 yards on two punt returns. He added two catches for 39 yards and one rush for 3 yards. His 21-yard reception in the second quarter was FIU's longest play of the young season.

FIU AT IOWA | NOON
FIU eagerly unveiled a new spread offense last week in its season opener at Kansas. However, the Golden Panthers didn't get to use it much.
The FIU offensive line could have a new look when the Golden Panthers visit Iowa on Saturday. Coach Mario Cristobal said redshirt freshman right guard Chris Cawthon has ''caught up to'' junior starting right guard Joe Alajajian, and both players are now co-starters, with the decision on the starter expected to be made before kickoff.
FIU
FIU freshman receiver and kick returner T.Y. Hilton knows how to keep a promise. On national signing day, it is not unusual to hear newly signed recruits boast about their aspirations when they start playing college football later that fall.
The defense is getting some reinforcements this week to go against an Iowa offensive line that might be the largest FIU faces face this season. Coach Mario Cristobal said Wednesday that he expects to have linebacker Michael Dominguez back for Saturday's game. . The defense also will see freshman linebacker Aaron Davis and freshman defensive end Kambriel Willis make their debuts.
FIU tight end Moses Hinton was finally granted an extra season by the NCAA after the senior appealed to have a red shirt his freshman season in 2004.
FIU
FIU showed in spurts during its season-opening 40-10 loss to Kansas that it has improved. But the Golden Panthers' inability to sustain a drive and a couple of lapses in punt coverage did them in.
FIU played the highest-ranked opponent in the six-year history of its football program Saturday night, and it showed. No. 14 Kansas handled FIU in all facets of the game and coasted to a 40-10 victory at Memorial Stadium in front of a crowd of 52,112 -- the largest in the 119-year history of Jayhawks football.

After a monthlong battle in camp, FIU has a new starting quarterback this season. Paul McCall won the competition with Wayne Younger and took the first snap against Kansas on Saturday night in the season opener.

It only took the first coin toss of last season to show a very young and inexperienced FIU team what it was up against in 2007. ''When we went out for the coin toss against Penn State I think it hit home,'' Mario Cristobal said of his first game as coach.
The secondary has reaped the benefits of a new-found pass rush this month in camp, with several interceptions.
FIU
Bigger, stronger, quicker is how quarterback Wayne Younger described FIU's offensive line. Entering Saturday's season opener at 14th-ranked Kansas, the prevailing view around FIU is that the offense should be more productive this year, in part because of the offensive line's improvement.
Coach Mario Cristobal said Wednesday that Paul McCall continues to lead the quarterback competition, but he wouldn't go so far as to name him the starter for Saturday's season opener at No. 14 Kansas.
Lightning delayed practice until Tuesday night. The decision on the Golden Panthers' starting quarterback lingered, as well. Three days from the season opener at Kansas, coach Mario Cristobal still has not publicly named a starter between Paul McCall and Wayne Younger.

FIU coach Mario Cristobal and offensive coordinator Bill Legg are not doctors, but they played the roles with their top two quarterbacks after spring practice ended.
